Forcing people out of what was fun in the original is just a bad decision. Hopefully random weapons are a setting that can be customized. Mimicking parallax scrolling and fog effects would've been enough. Here they spent a lot of time adding on each layer of the typical post-processing you find in this age without a thought given to whether it's a good idea or not. There was a little mess in Nidhogg 1's level design as part of the difficulty as I recall, but that seemed intentional. Level design is on point, but like in the video, it's visually cluttered. Melting off all facial features and detail on the characters would actually be preferable, I'm sad to say.
They remind me of the avatars you could choose in the "kid safe" versions of 90s chat rooms, only suitable for one-off kids meal toys that they run between branded toys. They're somewhere between licensed 80s franchise cartoons and Butt-Ugly Martians. There's just so much that was done because, as I would guess, the dev thought, "These are the typical steps you take when you make a sequel." I see a lot of unnecessary work that was done that never had a reason to exist in a sequel to Nidhogg.Īs for the characters, they're ugly and not enjoyable, and it's painful to see how much work went into them because it was totally wasted.

There's so much going on visually in the background and foreground with lots of different effects, and there's many weapons now so it'll take more experimentation to understand how to play (I'm assuming). Now the visuals and environments have a lot of detail, but things look a lot more complex and random now. It was a great spectator sport and had a really solid design. Onlookers quickly could understand how intense each encounter was and how awesome it was when someone managed to make a push. It was so successful because you could randomly watch someone playing this game, instantly comprehend what was going on. It was aesthetically simple yes, but it's gameplay was also extremely simple and easy to grasp. An art style shift is hit or miss (in this case, miss), but the entire thing behind the original Nidhogg was it had a beautifully simplistic design. Only one thing is certain in Nidhogg… the only way to win is to outwit your opponent.It's just crazy to me that this game is made by the same people who did the original.
